Privacy
This notice describes TrailWise, a free web app for planning camping road trips in Australia. It is operated by Actual IT (Actual Training Pty Ltd, ABN 60 626 629 454), Brisbane, Queensland. It is not legal advice.
The Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) do not automatically apply to every small business. Whether they apply to Actual Training Pty Ltd is for that company to confirm.
What we operate
TrailWise lets you plan a multi-day trip, save it to an account, share a read-only link, and post reviews, photos and condition reports on places. The site is hosted by Vercel. Account and trip data is stored in Postgres provided by Neon. Photos are stored in Vercel Blob.
Information you give us
- Account email, an optional name, and a public username if you set one.
- A password, stored only as a hash. We do not keep the password itself.
- Trips you save: the name, the places, coordinates, dates, vehicle type, preferences and any notes you type.
- Reviews, star ratings, photos and condition reports you choose to post.
- Messages you send to us, once a contact inbox is available.
- If you opt in to a departure reminder: the email address you ask us to use, and how many days before a saved trip you want the message.
Your email and real name are not shown on public reviews. A username is, if you have set one. A shared trip link shows the trip to anyone who has the link. It does not show your email or account id.
Information collected automatically
Vercel, the host, receives the usual request data needed to serve the site, including IP address and user agent, in its server logs. Vercel Web Analytics measures aggregate page traffic and does not use cookies.
Product analytics use PostHog in cookieless mode. Nothing is written to cookies, localStorage or sessionStorage for analytics. Person profiles are off, and session recording is off. Events are coarse: a page path with the query string and any share token removed, trip length in days, a stop count, and an Australian state for the start and end of a trip. Place names, emails, usernames, comments, coordinates and share tokens are stripped before an event is sent. If you have sent a browser "Do Not Track" signal, PostHog is asked to respect it. Analytics stay off entirely until the PostHog project key is configured. When they are on, events are sent to PostHog's US cloud.
Other services that see a request
- Mapboxdraws the map and calculates driving directions. Those requests include your IP address and the coordinates of the route, under Mapbox's own terms and privacy notice.
- Photon(photon.komoot.io), an OpenStreetMap geocoder operated by komoot, receives the place names you search for. Results may be stored with the trip because Photon's data can be kept under the Open Database Licence. We credit OpenStreetMap contributors on the attributions page.
- Neon stores the database (accounts, trips, reviews, condition reports).
- Vercel Blob stores photos you upload.
- Resend sends an optional departure reminder when you opt in and email sending is switched on. The message includes an unsubscribe link. Unsubscribing stops further reminders for that trip. We keep the address you gave us until you ask us to delete the account.
- Road-hazard and fuel-price feeds are requested by our server from the relevant government sources. Those requests do not include your account.
Why we use it
We use this information to run the app: sign you in, save and share trips, show community reports, keep the service reliable, and understand which parts of a free product are actually used. We do not sell personal information.
Condition reports and other public posts
Reviews, photos and condition reports are user-generated. They are opinions of the people who posted them, not a guarantee of what a track or campsite is like. They can be seen by other people using TrailWise. You can ask us to remove a post you made.
How long we keep it
Account data and trips stay until you ask us to delete them, or until we remove an unused account. There is no delete button in the app yet. Server logs and analytics are kept for the period set by Vercel and PostHog, which is shorter than the life of an account. Shared-trip links stop working when the owner turns sharing off.
